Semaglutide

It is administered as a once weekly injection subcutaneously, with a gradual dose increase over several weeks. It belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 agonists. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone produced in the gut in response to eating. This mechanism signals the brain resulting in powerful appetite suppression. It also regulates insulin and blood glucose levels, resulting in excellent glycemic control in type II diabetics. It has been marketed under brand names of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus.

Who should and should not use semaglutide?
FDA recommends semaglutide use for patients that have:
- BMI >27 kg/m2 , and at least one underlying medical condition such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or type II diabetes
- BMI > 30 kg/m2
Contraindications to semaglutide use include:
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
- MEN2 (multiple endocrine neaoplasia type 2)
- History of pancreatitis
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Renal Impairment
