Acute or chronic back pain can be debilitating. Pain can originate from almost any muscle group. Underlying factors such as stress, poor posture, injury, lack of nutrition and exercise can lead to muscle soreness, stiffness, and spasms, or “muscle knots.” These tender points in the muscles are formed from an inability to relax over time, diminishing blood flow and good metabolism. If left untreated, muscle knots can lead to muscle soreness, stiffness, and spasms, debilitating and affecting your quality of life.
Fortunately, we offer trigger point injection services to help alleviate pain associated with muscle knots by inducing muscle relaxation and restoring normal muscle function and blood flow. A small needle is inserted directly into the trigger point during the injections for back pain. Trigger point injections help break up the knot and relax the muscle, allowing it to return to its normal function, reducing pain, and improving the range of motion.
Injections / shots for back pain are performed by a trained clinician with prior experience in administering trigger point shots. The clinician will initially perform a careful examination by palpating over tender areas of the back. Once the tender areas are identified, overlying skin is then prepped with alcohol or betadine. A thin fine needle is inserted into the taut muscle bands. A small amount of a local anesthetic (typically lidocaine) is injected. This process may be repeated if there are several areas of concern.
Most patients feel almost immediate relief after the injections. Injected areas of the muscle may be sore for a few days after, and respond well to heat, ice, stretching, and over the counter Tylenol/Ibuprofen. Pain relief from trigger point injections can last from a few days to several weeks.
